Regional unemployment rate in Italy 2022, by gender
Unemployment in South Italy
Since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008, the south of Italy was particularly affected by the crisis on the labor market. Despite a steadily decrease in the country’s unemployment rate which started in 2015, many southern regions are still struggling against the high percentage of workforce without any occupation. In 2020, Calabria, Sicily and Campania registered the highest unemployment rates nationwide.
The EU member states with the highest unemployment rates
With roughly 16.5 percent of potential employees without any occupation, Greece was the first European Union member state in terms of the highest unemployment rate in 2020. Italy placed third, just behind Spain, where about 14 percent of the labor force was unemployed.
